Welcome to a panel discussion in connection with the exhibition Arctic Highways at the City Museum in Bodø
The exhibition presents the contemporary art collection of Sami art from Mötesplats Granö/Meetingplace Granö (NGO). Jan Wejdmark is the chairman of the board. The curators of the collection are Tomas Colbengtson, Gunvor Guttorm, the late Dan Jåma and Britta Marakatt Labba.
The collection contains artworks by Matti Aikio, Tomas Colbengtson, Gunvor Guttorm, Marja Helander, Dan Jåma, Laila Susanna Kuhmunen, Britta Marakatt Labba, Olof Marsja, Máret Ánne Sara, Sonya Kelliher-Combs, Maureen Gruben and Meryl McMaster. The artists represent Sami indigenous peoples as well as indigenous peoples in Alaska and Canada.
Artists and researchers Gunvor Guttorm, Harald Gaski and Tomas Colbengtson will present the central ideas and concepts behind the development and curation of the exhibition Arctic Highways and the exhibition catalogue. Marija Griniuk, who has worked on the site-specific planning of the exhibition at Bodø city museum, is the moderator.
Tomas Colbengtson explores images, colors and shapes based on Sami culture and the Nordic Scandinavian landscape. He experiments with combinations of different media and materials and has developed a new method for screen printing on glass in multiple layers. He often works with screen printing on metal, including aluminum, brass and silver, and also uses etching and digital art techniques. He has been an associate professor of graphics at Konstfack, the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.
Gunvor Guttorm is a Sámi artist, duodji practitioner, art historian and professor at Sámi allaskuvla (Sámi University) in Guovdageaidnu, Norway. She has contributed to developing duodji as an academic field and artistic research area, with particular emphasis on how Sami artistic knowledge and practice is passed on between generations and developed in contemporary contexts.
Harald Gaski is a Sami researcher, author and professor emeritus of Sami culture and literature at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and Sámi allaskuvla (Sami University College). His research includes Sami literature, oral traditions, yoik, indigenous aesthetics, mythology and indigenous methodologies.
